The Department of English has upheld a rich tradition of quality and excellence since its inception in 1967. Beginning with a small group of students, the department has steadily grown from strength to strength over six glorious decades. The Postgraduate programme was introduced in 2004, followed by the M.Phil. programme in 2014 and Doctoral Research in 2018. The lyrics of the college song, “Among the Birds and Flowers of Providence,” were composed by Sr. Patricia Adams, a distinguished member of the department. The department is committed to excellence in teaching and research. It promotes critical inquiry, encourages analytical diversity, and fosters intellectual growth alongside a strong sense of social responsibility. It also nurtures students’ talents by training them in language, literature, communication, and the liberal arts. Students of the department consistently demonstrate academic excellence by securing university ranks, clearing NET/SET examinations, pursuing doctoral studies, and winning accolades in co-curricular and extracurricular activities. From its early years, the department has actively supported pageantry, music, debates, and other liberal arts pursuits. The Literary Association and various clubs—including the Reading Club, Creative Club, Movie Club, and Trekking Club—play a vital role in ensuring the holistic development of students.
